Celebrating the life of

Richard L. May

May 30, 1924 - November 05, 2011

Richard L. May

SAVANNAH - Richard Dick Lloyd May, born May 30, 1924, to Benedict and Helen May, in New York, NY, passed away on November 5, 2011, at his home in Savannah, GA.

Dick lived his life quietly, but fully and with enthusiasm. He spent his childhood sailing and swimming in the waters around City Island, NY. His best childhoods memories were of times spent with his father and brother aboard the "RoRi", a sailboat hand-crafted by his father and named after Dick and his older brother, Robert deceased.

Dick served in the 42nd Rainbow Infantry of the US Army, where he fought in the Battle of the Bulge, where he received a bronze star. Following the war, Dick attended the Webb Institute of Naval Architecture in New York, from which he graduated in 1949 with a master's degree in Mathematics. He enjoyed a rewarding 30-year career at Texaco designing oil tankers, during which time he traveled internationally.

In 1951 he married Helen Cezeski and embarked upon a 47-year adventure in marriage. While living on Long Island, they raised two sons, Richard, Jr., and Jeffrey, to whom Dick passed on his love of math, nature and sailing.

Dick and Helen moved to Savannah in 1990, seeking a warmer golfing climate and new bridge companions. They created a rich and happy life at The Landings, and continued exploring the world. After Helen's death in 1998, Dick continued traveling and winning bridge games by partnering with his dear friend, Jill Kehoe. Dick and Jill became Landings Club Bridge Champions in November 2008. Dick also achieved the ACBL Silver Life Master Certificate in 2002.

Dick is survived by his son, Richard, Jr., his son, Jeffrey, his daughter- in-law, Kari, and grandchildren, Niko, James, Savannah and Rowan, all of Edmonds, WA. We will miss his kindness, gentle ways, generosity, dry wit and wisdom.

Dick's family invites all of his friends to a gathering at The Landings' Plantation Club on Friday, November 18, from 4:30 -- 6:30. Please contact 912-598-7549 for additional information.
